Yes! I agree that there are food making events, like tamales, in almost all cultures! I used to describe joong as "chinese tamales" because I heard someone else describe them that way but have lately stopped doing that because I also thing it short-changes both foods, just need to take the extra time to really describe and give justice to both!
I kinda feel the same way you do about making joong when it comes to making and frying the sesame balls for Lunar New Year. For the last few years, I’ve been meeting my mom at her house to learn the shaping and frying techniques. My mom does the traditional pressing and rolling of the frying balls of dough and was considered the number 1 sesame ball maker in my extended family, so I’ve been trying to master this technique from her. The operative word being “trying.”
