What a dream - this specific combo of Scandinavian/Japanese/craftman style, warm colors, and materials are things that I've been admiring for a long time! My partner and I are also saving to make changes to our smaller, dated kitchen. Our kitchen is original to the home and actually has a few similarities to your layout (minus the island and peninsula). Adding to the nosy questions if that's ok ><
1) How do you feel about the narrow countertops/drawers next to the range and fridge? We have the same fridge/stove layout, but I'm conflicted about how to use the small counters on both sides, especially since we don't have much counter space at all (we just have those and the ones around the sink in our galley kitchen).
2) I noticed that you opted out of a one-drawer pull out for oils/spices - what are your thoughts about having the layout of 3 drawers each next to the range?
3) How did you decide on which number/type of drawers to put where, and any tips for matching (or coordinating) the cabinet wood with flooring?
I'll stop there lol but congrats on the new kitchen and thanks for sharing your beautiful space (and amazing recipes) with us!
1. The narrow sections of counter on either side don't really bother me! I was a little concerned at first but we didn't have too many configuration options because we wanted to prioritize a big pantry. I set my prepped ingredients on either side which is great and then the drawers have our most used kitchen tools! Top shallow drawers have tongs, whisks, spatulas. The middle on the left is our spice drawer actually! and the big bottoms are storage for big pots and cookware. I think I'll probably do a post about what in my drawers and how I organized everything!
2. As mentioned above, the middle drawer on the left of our range is our spice drawer pull out with some organization tools. I find the 3 the tier cabinets much more efficient storage for the things we keep in our kitchen. I was playing around with the bigger 2 division cabinets (common in ikea kitchens/European kitchens) but with a big pantry and some larger cabinets it didn't really make sense to give all that space away.
3. Our kitchen isn't huge so the drawer divisions were pretty straightforward! We have narrow cabinet for cutting boards and sheet pants and then a big cab next to our under counter fridge for bigger daily tools like a salad spinner and mixing bowls. Those are the only cabs without drawers! For the cabinet doors and flooring, I think it's important to keep with the same species first of all. Then when comparing samples we paid attention to the undertones of the wood. White oak can either be very very cool, or sometimes pink, or more warm and orange. We found samples that had relatively the same level of warmth!
Thank you for the helpful info and for taking the time to respond! I really appreciate it :) It's great to hear that the narrow counter space and separate drawers have been super functional. Paying attention to both the species of wood and undertones make sense. Looks like I'll need to do some homework and go through my kitchen tools to sort out what we use on the regular. Thanks again, and I look forward to learning more about your organization!
I love every single choice you both made! And so sweet that it's your home/work/passions all in a beautiful space. Ok, here's my nosy question- what exact color and line of the Riva flooring did you use? In your pics it all looks so warm and melds a new kitchen in an older house. I'm in a similar style remodel on an old house and just so stuck on the floors. That and we have so much wood to match the tone with. Thank you!
I'm in love with your kitchen! For your cabinets, do the maple interior boxes match the cabinet doors that you got custom made separately? I was wondering how you were able to make them look seamless together, even though the grain and color may be different. Are the doors full oak wood? I really like the smooth, flat look of your doors, but many places I've looked with this style are in MDF, but not real wood. Lastly, may I ask how much your cabinets cost (I'm trying to get a good idea as I'm also based in the Bay Area)? Thanks so much for sharing!
Kristina, it's so beautiful!! Thank you for sharing. And I'm so honored to see my book on your shelf. :)
I hope you can visit and make pasta with me here soon!
Me too!!!
This is such a dream. Thanks for sharing this level of detail!
Honestly, how can I get Reuben to design my home?!
Thank you for sharing this detailed post about your new kitchen!!
you are so welcome!

Hi! Thank you for the thoughtful questions!

Thank you so much! We went with Rive Elite in Crystal! https://www.rivaspain.com/collection-riva-elite
It is light with enough warmth in it to still go with our older redder floors. Something on the cooler side just wouldn't have looked as good.
Thank you! I'll look into getting a sample!
Hi! Love your kitchen. Can you share where your pendant lights are from?
The brand is called In Common With! All their fixtures have such great colorways!
